Sustainable Tourism - Manda Brookman
Sustainable tourism: what's that all about then?
Some people think it's something to do with green issues; some think it's got something to do with financial viability. Some people say it's got something to do with local communities.
In fact it's all three: it's the people, the economy, and the environment. And making them benefit from each other. It's the triple bottom line.
And it's worth it. Over 80% of visitors come here because of the natural environment; 84% of people would choose an environmentally accredited site over one that isn't; 93% of people think tourism should support local businesses; the 8.6 million registered disabled people in the UK are entitled to better access, and bring with them £45b to spend to boot; and a tourism business that works well with its local community has local support and an extended welcome to offer its guests.
And there's some spectacular good practice already in Cornwall: good practice in working with local people to create jobs and opportunities; in ensuring that all types, ages, abilities, income levels and interests can access our huge range of sites, places to stay, eat, and visit; in working to reduce the amount of rubbish we create, and conserving water, energy and habitats; in working to provide better, kinder transport facilities for communities and our visitors; in ensuring local people can have their say in new developments; in buying good quality local produce and services, to ensure the financial, social, and environmental benefit is felt locally across the county. There's a slow revolution in progress. Its the triple bottom line.
So: if youre not already doing this triple bottom line thing, maybe you want to think about it. Or if you are doing it, or thinking about it, and want to take the next step, then feel free to ask for help: CoaST can provide support, advice and guidance on a range of issues, including a free information network from their website.
