Cornwall DMO

The Cornwall Destination Management Organisation (DMO) The Cornwall DMO came into being in 2005 as a public / private partnership. It is charged with giving strategic guidance to the industry, which means that it is the body that can drive the tourism industry forward into the future. The public sector, in the form of Cornwall Enterprise, brings cash to the table from Cornwall County Council for the strategic marketing of Cornwall. They have two representatives on the DMO. Until the end of 2006 the Districts still marketed their part of Cornwall externally with the four area guides, but most of them have given up that role, partly because of strategic issues, and partly because of cuts to their budgets. However, the Districts do have a crucial role in the management of the public product, i.e. beach management, beach safety, beach cleaning, public toilets, leisure facilities, litter, etc. The Districts have two representatives on the DMO. The private sector (in the form of the CCTF representatives) brings expertise and knowledge of the industry to the DMO. We have three representatives on the DMO, plus the chairman is also a private sector businessperson. (James Staughton, Managing Director of St Austell Brewery was the first CDMO chairman). Although not strictly a partner, South West Tourism participates in the DMO as observers because they need to keep in touch with what is happening in Cornwall (there will eventually be more than ten DMOs in the South West Region).
